Centre for Science of Student Learning

Programme to build state capacity for high quality assessments and research into the science of student learning

The Opportunity

A high-quality assessment system is central to an education system that delivers and supports high levels of student achievement. Learning data from standardized large scale assessments is critical to evaluate existing policies and inform future interventions.

India has made significant strides in path to assessment led education reform by instituting large scale assessments at the central (National Achievement Survey) and state levels (Student Learning Achievement Surveys). Unfortunately, the impact of these initiatives have been severely limited by poor state capacity to design and deliver quality assessments.

The Model

Centre for Science of Student learning engages with governments to set up dedicated assessments cells with requisite capacity to design high-quality assessments and provides the cell with long-term technical support and capacity building.

Potential for Systemic Impact

In its first year of operations, CSSL has worked with multiple states including Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan to set up dedicated assessment cells.
